Jordy Smith

Year born: 1988
Country: South Africa
Hometown: Durban, South Africa

Jordy Smith is here to rock the world. His rise to fame has been incubating for a couple years. His amazing 2006 top 30 finish had people shocked when they realized he only surfed in half the events. He turned up the volume by crushing the 2007 WQS Tour and is currently leading the season. Unlike a lot of pros, big waves and Hawaii are one of his strong suits. Coming into the Triple Crown with a 1700 WQS-point lead will allow him the confidence to continue his dominance.

Jordy Smith's accomplishments thus far even eclipses Kelly Slater's in comparison at the same age of nineteen. He is leading the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Word Qualifying Series (WQS). He is the reigning ASP Pro Junior Champ. He won the prestigious ASP Triple Crown Rookie Of The Year for 2006. He has already placed 3rd in a WCT event at J-Bay South Africa as a Wild Card in 2006. Remarkably he has four WQS Titles for 2007.

The consensus of videographers and photographers and general spectators is that he is the one of the most exciting and progressively radical surfers to watch. He has already qualified for the WCT 2008 Tour and he will prove to be even more exciting to watch when he takes on the elite WCT in man on man competition in 08. Above all Jordy is relaxed, confident, and having a good time and the ride is just beginning.

Hometown: Cape Town
Nickname: Wes Life, Grey Balls
Local spot: Kommetjie
Favourite spots: Kommetjie

I have grown up and lived in Kommetjie my whole life, and living by the sea and having a dad that surfs I was bound to start some time. It was at the age of 6 when I first tried... and grew to love the sport.

I was in the perfect situation to be a grom frothing to surf because I have never lived further than a quick walk to the beach to long beach which is a very consistant wave and a pretty good spot to start surfing on.

I grew up in Cape Town and surfed all the local cadet series when I was young. At the age of 14 I started entering in a couple of the Billabong events; at 16 I started travelling throughout South Africa taking part in the Billabong Junior series more seriously. I surfed for my School and we entered the S.A School surfing competition which we won. The reward was a trip to Reunion Island where we got to surf all the local surf spots.

When 18 I went to Australia where I took part in the Junior series there. I got to surf the really good surf spots that Australia has to offer. The next few years I continued surfing the Billabong Junior series and all other local competitions. At 20 I started entering the P.S.T. Series.

This year I've been to Madagascar on a photo shoot with O'Neil which was awsome. I'm currently taking part in the Q.SW. Events being held around SA.
